"Recovery" still causes file corruption in certain rare cases. I don't think it is still a solution for "fixing" files, just for getting your data out to a known good file.

Think of it as "data recovery" rather than "file recovery," protestations of FMI luminaries to the contrary.

Already tried Recovery. No joy.

Indeed. Here's an interesting observation.

If I do a recovery on the datafile on the MacBook Pro with 10.5, if I put the recovered file back on the hosting machine, a G4 running 10.4, it won't work. Can't enter text into fields, can't do much of anything as for entering data with the 10.5-recovered data file on the 10.4 operating system machine. Have to make a clone of the file from the 10.4 machine and import all the records from the 10.5- recovered file into the clone generated on the 10.4 machine.

VERY 'odd'.....

I doubt if it is a network issue. It seems to be confined to the this datafile, FMP10a and/or MacBook Pro machine. Other machines don't seem to have this problem with that file. Or any other file.

I've tried re-installing FMP10a, also. No improvement either.

There is something definitely 'odd' about all of this.

Try the File > Recover feature. This is an "off label" use for it, but sometimes it works, and it's an easy thing to do.

If that still doesn't help, there's the really tedious and painstaking approach of using "Save a Copy As ..." to make a clone of the file, then importing all the data from the old file into the clone. Obviously, this is something you'd want to do on the host computer, not your guest MacBook.
