dear all,
just an idea: if being part of the selection is a property
of each individual character, this should simplify things.
plus, it would be possible to have non-contiguous selections.
just my 2c really,
thanks,

Folks,
Here is a way you can help to invent the "mathematical description" of
text layout.
We need a level of description that is even higher than the rules.
Suppose the rules in the essay are the output of a more abstract
description. What would that description be?
One troubling part of the Text Field essay is creating the selection
areas. Between one and three green rectangles are placed behind the text
to show the selection. On pages 14 and 15 the bounds of these rectangles
are computed. Here is the heart of it.
How could we describe this in a much more compact way? What is the more
abstract layer above these rules?

And, feel free to simplify any other part of the essay.

Yes, the correct URL for the image and changes is:

By the way, this is the "Moshi" system. It has many half-finished
experiments in it, and a fair amount of just plain wreckage. It is also
an extremely useful tool for me and Scott Wallace.
