Lout ( http://sourceforge.net/apps/mediawiki/lout/index.php?title=Main_Page ) has a very interesting design for text layout. It is in fact a DSL for page layout, and a quirky but powerful one at that. Even so he has a good discussion of handling regions of text and larger structures such as pages and documents.
