Hi Wolfgang,

The version of this we did a few years ago in Etoys worked this way. Each 
character could determine for itself whether it was in the selection and could 
change color ....

dear all,
just an idea: if being part of the selection is a property
of each individual character, this should simplify things.
plus, it would be possible to have non-contiguous selections.
