DISKUSI TENGAH HARI:
"RETHINKING THE ROLE OF INNOVATIVE CSR IN ADVANCING BUSINESS GROWTH AND
SOCIO-ECONOMIC DEVELOPMENT"

Corporate Social Responsibility (CSR) is not charity. However, majority of CSR
activities in Indonesia are not more than allocating some amount of money for
certain underserved or disadvantaged people. This is particularly the case
after Government issued a new private company law on July 20, 2007 which makes
CSR an obligatory for all private company operating in Indonesia. As such, CSR
activities are more often seen as a burden that impedes the company’s growth.

In contrast, international community sees CSR as important part of business
sustainability. United Nations recognizes this through the foundation of UN
Global Compact in 2000 that encourages businesses worldwide to adopt
sustainable and socially responsible policies, and to report on their
implementation. Business leaders nowadays are faced with the challenge to come
up with innovative CSR activities for sustainability of their business and its
contribution to economies and societies.

Innovative ideas from universities as center of excellence can play important
role to help businesses implement good CSR and business practices. These are
possible however only when close collaborations among businesses, universities
and government exist. In Indonesia getting business leaders, university
thinkers and government officials together to establish common understanding
and collaboration on innovative CSR is still a challenge.

The Center for Creative Economic Studies at Atma Jaya Catholic University
Jakarta in collaboration with UN Global Compact Indonesia will hold a half-day
informal discussion session to establish common understanding on CSR among
businesses leaders, university thinkers and government officials. Key questions
for the discussion are:

        1. How should we understand CSR as a main driver of sustainable
business growth? How is it possible that business interests are not in conflict
with societal concerns? What kind of business practices will help delivering
business growth and at the same time ensure that markets, commerce, technology
and finance advance in ways that benefit economies and societies everywhere?
        1. Is it possible for Indonesia? Are there living examples of business
practices in Indonesia that embody such CSR concept? What are innovative ideas
from universities that help realizing such CSR concept in Indonesia? How to
come up with those innovative ideas?
        1. What kind of collaborations between businesses, universities and
governments should be established to realize this? What are the first steps?
What should be done?
