According to http://www.kubuntu.org/doc/7.10/network/C/connect-modems.html, "If 
you see the following error, then your modem is not supported, in use, or not 
properly configured". So let's give this a try and see how it goes =>

$ sudo nano /etc/wvdial.conf
edit the file as required....
$ sudo wvdial
