Well, the controller itself is supported, obviously (as an ATA controller), but I don't see that it is supported as a RAID controller. And, if this is the case -- ie: 1) the controller is indeed 6300ESB; and 2) it is supported as an ATA controller; but 3) it is not supported as a RAID controller -- then that would explain the situation described in the original message. That is: the system happily sees two individual ATA drives, but cannot see any array.
