Daniel, Jacob,
Thanks for all your help! I do appreciate it.
There's no automatic link between localisations and in-game nations. You
can make suggestions for improvements in the normal way: submit a ticket
to the tracker. Best to assign them to Jos ("mixcoatl"), our current
nations maintainer.
Ok. I think I'll submit a ticket to add the Scottish Gael nearer the
time then, I've looked at the Irish and the Scots and they're dandy for
Irish-speaking Ireland and the Scots-speaking Scots but in a Gaelic
localisation they'd look decidedly odd.
Normally I'd recommend you work with the freeciv.pot from the stable
branch, currently S2_3. Trunk is more subject to string churn -- typo
fixes, wholesale rewrites, extra documentation -- so you might find some
of your work is wasted. S2_3 has been through all that in the run-up to
2.3.0, so is more stable, and should have a good run of releases ahead
of it. Plus this means your work sees the light of day sooner
I don't know whether to have a nervous breakdown or just a minor sobbing
incident. Why do you (not you personally) have to make things so obscure
to someone without a degree in IT? I almost feel like chucking the whole
thing.
I've looked through http://svn.gna.org/viewcvs/freeciv/branches/S2_3/
but can't find a freeciv.pot on it. If someone points me to it and if I
merge that with what I have done between two days ago and today with
that, will that work? Or is anything I did between then and now
worthless? I've done about another 10% of the file since then and I
don't know how to merge from two files. I case someone can help, I've
uploaded both files to my site (http://www.akerbeltz.org/gd.rar) with
the old file entitled gdold.po and the new one gdnew.po.
BTW, if you have GNU gettext installed, you can always merge your
translation with a new freeciv.pot without needing a working checkout of
the Freeciv code, like this:
$ msgmerge gd.po freeciv.pot -o gd.new.po
(where gd.po is your old localisation and gd.new.po will be the result)
Not at the moment. I'm trying to find someone locally to give me a crash
course in all this Linuxy stuff but no luck so far. I'm a translator, a
rather good one, but all this is very difficult for me. Not that I'm a
technophobe or anything but I must say the way OpenOffice/LibreOffice
handle things via pootle is a lot more user friendly.
Speaking of user friendly, is there any way of ordering those
placeholders? Sometimes you get strings like "blabla %s blabla %s %s"
which in English works in that order but in Gaelic (and I suspect some
other languages) it would rather be "blabla %s3 blabla %s1 %s2"
gd.po:6: invalid plural expression
I can't find that. Is that in the settings? The people at Virtaal messed
up the plural settings for gd and at the moment it only shows 2 plural
fields instead of 4. They're fixing it for the next release but at the
moment it's buggy (the problem being that every time I open it in
Virtaal, it overrides the manual plural rule with its internal buggy
one). I intend to continue using Virtaal and then at the end use Poedit
to check and correct all the plural stuff. It should look like that
(http://translate.sourceforge.net/wiki/l10n/pluralforms#g) and I've
manually put those into the two po files I uploaded to my site.
gd.po:10960: format specifications in 'msgid' and 'msgstr' for argument 1 are
not the same
gd.po:11078: format specifications in 'msgid' and 'msgstr' for argument 2 are
not the same
gd.po:11104: format specifications in 'msgid' and 'msgstr' for argument 1 are
not the same
gd.po:11120: format specifications in 'msgid' and 'msgstr[0]' for argument 2
are not the same
gd.po:11140: 'msgstr' is not a valid C format string, unlike 'msgid'. Reason:
The string ends in the middle of a directive.
gd.po:11154: 'msgstr' is not a valid C format string, unlike 'msgid'. Reason:
The string ends in the middle of a directive.
gd.po:13685: format specifications in 'msgid' and 'msgstr' for argument 1 are
not the same
/usr/bin/msgfmt: found 9 fatal errors
I really don't know where these come from or how to fix them.
