Hi Ladislav, > Is practicaly possible to compile on demand? > I mean that on the instalation CD would be all source codes for key parts > of FreeDOS and C compiler and all necesary things for compiling.
No, that could be a waste of space and time. The sources are often bigger than the compiled versions and most users will only need the sources of a few selected packages. In other words, it is okay to have a iso for a "base with sources" cdrom but "everything with sources" would be overkill. Which is why we have "everything, but without sources" as cdrom iso image and a directory where you can download sources for each package separately :-). Talking about the time: Compiling stuff takes time, and cleaning up all compile howtos / scripts to have "hit this button to compile automatically" style scripts for every package would take quite a bit of time too. > After it user could > set on or off some compilation options etc. and > a new FreeDOS binary would > be compiled. This custom FreeDOS version could be SYSed to harddisk. Depends on which binaries you have in mind for that. And which options. For things like FreeCOM and the kernel, it would indeed be funny to let the user decide which features he wants. For example "should your FreeCOM support the DIR command? Should it support long file names? ...?". But... If you ask me, this will be something only for very experienced users and users with very special needs, for example users who want a very tiny FreeDOS for a diskette or ROM. So if you want to provide this option, please make a zip version, per package. What I am trying to tell is: "Get this zip if you want to make a FreeCOM with special compile time settings, and that zip to compile a FreeDOS kernel with lots of fine-tuning options" ;-). > It is just an idea... Sure :-). I hope the "waste" in the beginning of this mail did not annoy you. It IS an idea, but I want to make clear that it would be a BAD idea to have some "Gentoo FreeDOS". Its way more important to have an EASY FreeDOS, which can be used by people who know "the old DOSes", without overwhelming them with questions like "would you like a wheelmouse driver for your DEFRAG, should we optimize the DEFRAG for SATA, and do you want to run the USB core on the 2nd CPU of your PC?"
