Yes, I got this email from you, but it's been crazy busy where I work,
so I haven't had time for long replies to anyone. And your email
seemed like it would be a long reply.

Anyway, to comment on what you mention below:

If we're worried about the usage of the word "old" then how about
"classic"? I feel this is semantics. I'll make that change now.

But your other email said you didn't like those two points being
mentioned on the front page for the FreeDOS site, that it would be
better to give people a reason to try out FreeDOS and use it for
something. However, looking at how DOS is used today, I think it
really does come down to the 3 main points mentioned on the site:

   1. To run classic DOS games
   2. To run business software that only supports DOS
   3. To support an embedded DOS system

Are there many people doing other things with FreeDOS? I know a guy
who set up a FreeDOS machine to run MAME, but that sort of fits into
the "classic DOS games" category, doesn't it? Many of us use FreeDOS
to write code for FreeDOS, but does it make sense to add that to the
list on the site?

I'd be happy to add other points if people think there are enough
people doing it that the statement is true. I don't want to add fluff
to the web site, claiming uses for FreeDOS that aren't really there.
There's a nice mp3 player for FreeDOS, and I know people who have set
up players on Windows or Linux to play music through their home. Are
people doing this with FreeDOS machines?

I'm asking in all honesty here - I want to know so I can make the site better.

I like this idea. How about I instead create a news item on the
FreeDOS web site, and ask people to respond in the forum how they are
using FreeDOS. I don't think it's appropriate to clog up people's
inboxes by having the replies come here, though.

This has always been my vision: Post "1.0", I'd also like to see more
utilities to make it possible to replicate some of the advanced
features we take for granted in modern operating systems, such as
Linux. I want to revive GNUish and replicate a modern UNIX-like
environment under DOS. I want DOS to be usable by everyone, not just
DOS geeks. Linux users should feel at home. I'd like FreeDOS to appeal
to Windows and Mac geeks, but for that we'd need to have a strong GUI.
I'd like to see us push forward on one or two GUIs, and let that
friendly competition drive new features. Sort of like how KDE and
GNOME pushed each other to make the Linux desktop easier to use. I
think we can do something like that for FreeDOS.

It's posted on my "blog" (of sorts) at www.freedos.org/jhall - but I
haven't updated this page since we released "1.0".

I haven't chased these goals since "1.0" because all my energies went
into getting "1.0" out the door, and I kind of needed a break. I
admit 6 months is kind of a long break, though. :-)
