Here's the reason I put the comment about emulators on the front page: At the time, I had received several angry emails from irate newbies who had downloaded this new FreeDOS thing, and decided to try it out. They hadn't paid attentions to the messages telling them they were about to format their hard drive, or they didn't realize what "format" meant, or they sort of assumed FreeDOS would somehow be smart enough _not_ to wipe their Windows partition. They wanted to know what I was going to do to get their data back. So I added the text about using an emulator if you are new to DOS in an effort to reduce the number of newbies who accidentally wiped their systems while trying out DOS.
