DJGPP can also be compiled as a cross-compiler, so DJGPP apps could even be compiled in native linux. Another option is to pass commands to a dos-based compiler through dosemu in a terminal. That is how parts of OpenWatcom are compiled (because source code for wgml I think is not available and only DOS and OS/2 binaries are available). There is likely a way to write a binfmt script to run dos-apps through dosemu.
