QBASIC (as a specific example) is an issue for me, because it requires
proprietary software to compile the source code into an executable binary.
In order for someone else to contribute to the program, or to take the
program and modify it to add a new features, that person must have the
QBASIC compiler, which is propriety software.

We must be able to use free software tools and compilers to create and
compile our programs. For example, if the program could be compiled using
FreeBASIC, then we could use free tools to recompile the program for
ourselves. FreeBASIC is under the GNU GPL.
