So what? UNIX was 100% proprietary when it was created and also relied
on proprietary development tools. People who care about free software
wrote free replacements. As far as I know, this is also the reason for
FreeDOS.

Do you really mean to say that because DOS development has historically
relied on proprietary tools that their should be no drive to make free
replacements? Come on.
