Not to argue theology, but isn't it also specifically designed to
prevent censorship?

It seems to my silly little brain that having each node only know
about a handful of other nodes is a great way to achieve that goal.

I didn't say private Freenets. I actually used the word "cluster"
before, but picked up Brandon's term "private network." I think
actually "subnetwork" would probably be a better term, kind of like
what an IP subnet does.

An IP subnet participates in the global Internet, but has a gateway to
route data in and out of the subnet. Similarly, a Freenet subnet would
participate in the global Freenet, but would have a gateway to route
data in and out.

The idea isn't to subvert or opt out of the worldwide Freenet. The
idea is to limit the hazards of wide-open interconnectedness.

BTW, Creating a private Freenet (by which I mean a closed group of
nodes that doesn't interact with any other nodes) is quite possible
right now with Fred. It's providing participation + protection that's
hard.

I disagree that this is unnecessary bloat. Also I don't think Fred's at
a point where a fork is possible.

But like I said before: I guess I thought Freenet was a system for
distributing files in a hostile environment. It seems like paranoia is
built in from the ground up -- this optional feature would be at most
a few more lines of code, and would give some vital protection.

I dunno, I guess I think it's a good idea.
