This is the way it's supposed to work. But there are many times when I
have run ./configure on our software or the packages that it depends
upon and it's died early in the process. And then one must try
autoreconf, and after that various things break within autotools - it
complains about the version of libtool, the versions of macros, etc. And
I end up debugging M4 programs instead of working on our software.
Let me reiterate that. IT DOES NOT "JUST WORK". Never in my experience.
"IT NEVER WORKS" is a lot closer to the truth.
