Another framework you could check out is Pigment:

I don't really know much about it nor how mature it is, but if you're in
the early stages of evaluation, you could consider all your options. 
Elisa (Fluendo's HTPC software) is using this.

Pigment is higher level and uses Gstreamer for multimedia.

It may well be.  But probably the most important element of Kaa, the one
needed for building interfaces (kaa.candy, the canvas API) isn't at any
usable point yet.  I need to buckle down and write it -- hopefully
during May.  But the UI is just one small part of the overall system,
and Kaa may meet your other needs.

Could you enumerate your expectations and requirements?  We can tell you
how well Kaa would meet your needs.
