If U use Hlfs make sure you build python stuff without stack smashing
protector.
For a pax enabled kernel you need to paxctl -m mplayer and xine.

I created a dedicated user freevo in /srv/freevo with all of it's media
inside there and use attached startup script.
For fast boot only load what you need for freevo and then start freevo
with the script, so networking/lirc/tv-card/sound/lcdproc, other stuff
afterwards. (create a pre and post freevo script for it)
I don't use hal/dbus since udev does its job, if you have a lot of usb
goodies attached (card readers slow down boot on detection) you could
blacklist the apropriate modules for that and load them after starting
freevo via a post script.

For getting cooler/quieter I recomend using cpu-freq or whatever tool
thereis to step back your cpu.
On AMD there are *vcool utilitys, don't know for Intel.

Have fun building... ;-)
