OpenSSL do work - even better, although it is slightly larger.

I originally used OpenSSL, but debian complaint about incombatible licenses. 
At least Debian is not allowed to link a program with GPL-licsense with 
OpenSSL. Therefore I added GnuTLS-support and this is also the prefered 
library. Since FreeWRT is a linux-distribution just like debian, the 
license-issue might affect FreeWRT also.

Tntnet is LGPL now and I don't know, if that matters.
