Can I do this via the grub commandline?
I had some problems with different framebuffer devices conflicting: all I had 
todo was removing "vga=" lines.
tty in 1280x800 is realy great :)
I would try modeset=1 if you can give me a hand ? ;)

Do you have this also on plain tty or only in X?
If not I would suggest changing AccelMethod to UXA in xorg.conf.
Perhaps it helps?
