If I compile intelfb KMS directly into kernel and use "i915.modeset=1" in grub 
commandline I get correct KMS, too.
So I guess the "enable by default" could be disabled. :)

I got this also while testing. Its because FW got intelfb only as 'm' and vga 
and vesa as 'y'.
So there will be only a limited VGA fb by default, even with KMS.
Simple solution is to compile them only as modules but this would render not 
intel hardware useless.
I guess its possible to tell the kernel to switch console to inteldrmfb as 
soon as it gets available but I've no idea how and if this would work with 
splashy.
