Greetings,

Steve, I can't argue with your basic premise (that Hal should get paid for
his work and get proper credit) but I must disagree with your argument
below. Writers do not get paid by the hour. If that were true I'd be a
millionaire by now. At best, you might get paid by the word (usually for
articles and short stories.) You often get a flat rate or royalties. If you
ever open a publishing firm and are going to pay writers by the hour,
please let me know. :-)

This does raise the question though of how much is intellectual property
worth. Much like everything else I guess it depends on what the buyer is
willing to pay for it. I would love to take one of Hal's classes or get to
more of the gatherings (like the recent CFNorth) but finances don't always
permit it. But can I afford the books that have been put out on Fusebox?
Yep. Have I bought any of them? Yep. Is this helping to support the Fusebox
community at large and the authors in particular? I hope so.

I'm very thankful for the Fusebox community that we have. I've learned a
great many things from it, and have gotten some very useful tools from it.
And when asked about the tools or the techniques I always give credit to
the community. I'm very glad that Hal has put his writings on the web, and
that you and he and others have all developed and released tools to the
community for free. Would I pay for the Fusebox architecture itself? Maybe
not. Would I pay for the tools released if the Fusebox architecture was
free and the tools had a price? Maybe (depends on the tool and how useful
it is. I bought a copy of Adalon since I find it very useful.)

Anyway, just my $.02 worth of ramblings.
