My first digital camera was the old Apple QuickTake 7 years ago. The resolution was 600x800, not even 1 megapixel. I was able to use it to print fairly large architectural pictures of my models in college.
As Bruce mentioned, it's the optics, AND it's the skills of the user that determines good pictures. I still use my old quicktake for quick web pics. We use an old 1.3 MP D-360 in the office for site photos and it still takes great pictures. So if 1.3MP good enough for a graphic design firm, then its good enough for most people. The whole megapixel issue is kind of like the Mac/PC Mhz myth. Buy a quality camera over quantity. But most important, have fun with your new camera!
