Just thought I would post the progress of my drive update.

The new drive is very quiet! After installing OSX and restarting, I thought
it had hung during initial boot-up. I had to put my ear up to the iBook to
see if it was doing anything. I could barely hear the drive accessing and
this was in a rather quiet room with minimal ambient noise. It was still
going through boot up so it hadn't locked up.

It's much easier to hear it writing to the drive but still quieter than the
original Toshiba 10GIG it replaced and no more listening to that annoying
clickity-clack noise that Toshiba drives make (although since I put it in an
external FireWire case I suppose I'll still be listening to it).

A word of warning though. I've opened up every model of PowerBook (many
times) prior to the iBook & TiBook and I have to say this was the most
difficult one I've ever worked on. It took me 3 hours to swap the drive and
it was a bit nerve wracking worrying that I was going to break plastic. No
wonder Apple won't let anyone besides their service center in Texas mess
with them. Don't do this yourself unless you've spent lots of time "under
the hood" of a PowerBook and even then think twice about it.

BTW, if anyone saw the MacAddict article on installing a drive in the Dual
USB iBook, it's not entirely accurate. They forgot to mention several screw
locations that you need to remove. Thankfully I had also reviewed the
procedure in a service manual so I knew to look for the screws.

Anyhow, it's happily chugging away and I'm finally ready to leap head first
into OSX. I've made a 30GB UNIX partition for that, and the remainder (just
under 8GB) is for OS9 and the content of my original drive.
