Hmm, how odd, I booted my TiBook with the original 20G Travelstar in 
it without a power supply, what rev of the TiBook do you have? I have 
a rev a 500 Mhz one.

OWC had (I think they still do) IBM FW cards for 29 bucks, works fine 
for me in both 9 and X, as long as I don't try hot swapping the card. 
That is, if the card is in the machine when I boot, or I insert it, 
it works fine, I can swap devices just fine, but if I eject the card, 
it won't mount devices unless they're powered on and connected before 
I reinsert the card.
