Sounds like a whacked-out power manager. In order to reset it, you are supposed to shut the computer down, remove the battery and AC adapter, and press a little button accessible by a paper clip somewhere on the side or the back. I haven't looked too closely at a clamshell iBook to know where the little button is, but some hunting should turn it up. If you want it officially from Apple, go to www.apple.com/support and search the knowledge base for "reset power manager."
