Sounds like a whacked-out power manager. In order to reset it, you are
supposed to shut the computer down, remove the battery and AC adapter,
and press a little button accessible by a paper clip somewhere on the
side or the back. I haven't looked too closely at a clamshell iBook to
know where the little button is, but some hunting should turn it up. If
you want it officially from Apple, go to www.apple.com/support and
search the knowledge base for "reset power manager." There will be a
single entry that contains instructions for resetting the power manager
on every Apple laptop ever made.

Good luck!
