There is a new Firewire 800 card out by Lacie. However it uses a separate power supply because it is 800, and cannot be supplied with enough power from the host computer, as I understand. Check it out.

However, it is not the 800 speed is compromised by the seek time of your peripheral device. So for example a new Western Digital 1000 rpm is best, but have limited size, much less than 160 GB (I think about 60 MB offhand).

Conclusion: Your Maxtor should be fine with any Firewire 400, such as OCW.
