I have never opened my new iBook any further than it takes to see the screen.

How far can they be safely opened???

I looked through the iBook literature for a picture showing the limits of mobility of the screen but there aren't any.

Well. you might find it more comfortable to open it a little more than that. To find out how much further it will open, just gently continue to push the screen back until you meet resistance. You won't damage it doing this as long as you don't force it beyond that point.
