Nope, I didn't try OpenFirmware commands.
Try: Boot into Open Firmware by pressing Command-Option-O-F at startup and first typing "reset-nvram," pressing the Return key, and then "reset-all."
User testimonial: I rescued 2 Pismo batteries last week using the info from MacInTouch by booting into Open Firmware and issuing a "reset-all" command. They are working fine and continue to hold a 2-3 hr charge.
