Claire, You need to make sure that the memory is the type required for the 17" PowerBook. Other than that, they should be compatible. As to your other question where you asked if it was better to get 2 sticks of 512MB or 1 of 1GB, you basically gave the answer yourself. If later, you want to go to 2GB, you simply have to buy another 1GB stick, where if you get a 2nd 512MB stick, you'll have to throw away one 512MB stick and get a 1GB, which would be 1.5GB.
