Repair Permissions is important; do it early and often, but always (if possible) from your boot volume.
Could someone kindly explain to me (or point to a website that does so) why Mac OS X needs this procedure from time to time? I am familiar with the concept of Unix permissions, I just find it strange that they get mixed up and need to get repaired manually...
