I think the original poster mentioned using OS 9. I don't think you have to restart with the card in in OS 9. If I remember correctly when I had my Wallstreet, I was able to insert the card at any time and it would be recognized immediately, under OS 9 only. The same card that is recognized in 9 won't be recognized at all by AirPort software in X.
