The only real need to "zero all data" is if you fear someone would try to recover anything from your drive in the unlikely event someone stole your computer AND if you actually had data that would be considered necessary to find/recover. Yes, if you don't zero it out, it is possible to recover data from the drive after a re-format. But, this data would not be found by standard software running over it. In other words, Laurent is correct in saying that "zero out data" is something you really don't have to do. For me, working for the government, it's a requirement to use the zero out option for obvious reasons. Just wanted to add my two cents!
