But you need to keep in mind that the older Mac has to run OS X if you want
to share the printer with your newer Macs...

Older Macs can run LocalTalk Bridge, a free download from Apple. As the title indicates, it will bridge between LocalTalk (the 4/600) and ethernet. An old Powerbook 520 would be great for that purpose.
