I hate it when campuses go all PC. It really has nothing to do with doing the job better or saving money, it's really about a staff of incompetent IT personnel who refuse to learn anything but the most basic PC skills. Take the school I go to: all PC network, and the IT staff haven't a clue what they are doing. The wireless went down in one building for 2 weeks, the guys on site never bothered to say anything about it to anyone else despite numerous complaints, and the only answer to us students was "it's not our responsibility." so the main IT office never even got word that the wireless was down. Once they did find out, they didn't even know what was wrong for another week. Complete incompetence. What really pains me is that they have a B&W sitting under a table in a computer lab, no one knows how it works, no one cares, so it jsut sits there taking up space.

I wish I could say I was a dumpster diver and got some of those Macs, but alas, it hit the local news before we knew what was happening. But now I'm keeping a sharp eye as I understand the Windoze systems have won out and next fiscal year the Macs will be history. (They have already replaced the student labs with Windoze systems.) I'd like to have my old dual processor
G4 with the 20" Cinema display.

Up until recently, the systems were changed out every two years so we were fortunate at one time to have the latest and the greatest. Alas, no more.
Not even OS upgrades.

I realize greed is a natural human condition but I've traveled all over the world and have never seen in other countries what I've seen here. But then perhaps it's where I live. Annapolis, Maryland the "Sailboating Capital of the World" a/k/a Ego Alley. But then there are other rivals, Newport, RI and
Auckland, New Zealand.

If you think "Only in America", oh, dear, you are so, sooo
wrong...greed is a natural human condition.

I think you are right Michelle, some of these
will definitely end up on eBay. Why didn't they just donate to the
Christina
Foundation or another charitable org and take the write off?

Because as a government entity they're non-profit, ergo, no tax write-
off and they have to go through specific procedures dispose of
surplus systems; most of the time these rules are deeply convoluted
because people are always good at manipulating them for personal profit.

Also, having worked in .edu and non-profits for quite a while, I can
tell you that our systems tend to get run into the ground before we
send 'em off to Surplus Property.

Of course at
the college I worked for, they just put Macs in the dumpster. Go
figure!

Hey, more for the dumpster divers! I should hope you rescued at least
some of them...
