I decided to go this route, because I want to use the same email address for the list as I use now.

I am told I am subscribed when I click on the confirmation link in an email I received, but I am not receiving any posts and whenever I go to <http://groups.google.com/group/g-books> I am told I cannot post messages because I am not a member - what gives?

I do have a Gmail account, but I don't want to receive list email at that email address. So, now that I am "subscribed" how do I change my preferences?
