thanks for getting back to me eric.

i've tried out the suggestions and found some thing that may be causing the
problem.

when i went to the File Sharing folder in the system i found loads of files
with the extension pdf - and all the names were of disks i've put in the
machines at some point. al the cd's, dvd's, firewire hd's and network hd's
were in there.

there we're 280 items equalling 90meg!!!!!

so i trashed them and everything's back and speedy again. the only other
extra thing i did was defrag the HD on the 8500 as it was severely
fragmented.

does anyone have any idea what these files are and how to stop them being
created????
