Don't know what the files do but they probably were responsible for the
slowdown. What was [probably] happening was that your 8500 (the server) was
searching through each and every one of these files before responding to the
client's (G4) request for an AppleShare connection.

I've always ensured that I had the "owner" user set up (without password in
the past) on OS 7/8/9 so I could access *all* drives hooked up to the host.

BTW OS X 10.0.4 is now doing a reasonable job of acting as a file server. I
can now log into my G3 with a Powerbook 540c or Quadra 700 running OS 8.1.
However, the OS X AFS server does seem a little flaky. I've now had to
reboot OS X twice because I could no longer log into my computer (it wasn't
a crash... I just couldn't figure out how to restart the server software :(
[OS X has crashed only *once* since April 1, 2001 and that was when I
plugged in and unplugged a USB CD-RW *during* start up, not exactly an
everyday occurrence during boot time... I am now a 90%+ OS X user... the
stability of the system is AMAZING (& the multitasking is pretty nice too,
even on a G3/450)].

ABSOLUTELY!!! If you prevent the other drives from sharing you'll speed
things up immensely. You'll speed things up even more if you share only a
few folders with the files contained therein. Also, the fewer files being
shared the faster your 8500 will start up.
