I did the whole 7x00 series upgrade thing (with a 7500/100) and to be
honest was not massively impressed by the results. I eventually cut my
losses and sold it in order to buy a B&W G3. I love my B&W and can't see
myself selling it anytime soon. I found that, although it's only a
400MHz (only 25MHz faster than the G3 upgrade I fitted, at a large cost,
to my 7500) G33 it flies compared to my old PowerMac 7500 with a G3
upgrade. I also have to say I love the looks of the B&W which, despite
the garish looks, is a very nice machine (same case as the G4 PM) and a
good performer. It has the following advantages compared to the 7600 you
have now:
1. Holds it's value better as it is able to run OS X 'out of the box'
and looks much nicer.
2. Memory is dirt cheap at the moment (I have 576MB in mine!)
3. It has IDE (ATA) and as such the hard disks are very cheap. I would
however advise you buy a 450MHz machine to avoid ATA compatibility
trouble. The Rev. 1 machines (like mine) have IDE compatibility
problems, more details at http://www.xlr8yourmac.com.
4. Has a 16MB OpenGL capable graphics card (nice touch) rather than the
poorly and ancient 4MB (maximum VRAM) GFX card in the 7x00
5. Can take any ATAPI CD/DVD drive. It may not BOOT from all drives
though, should you want to boot from the OS 9 install CD.
6. It runs OS X without any dodgy installers or patches, which a pre-G3
PM will require to work, so you can play with Apple's new baby :)
7. You can get one for the equivalent of 500 in the US :)
I am very happy I went overboard and got a B&W G3, but I went via the
expensive route, and regretted it afterwards as it cost me a good 400,
and wouldn't want it to happen to anyone else. It's pretty galling when
you have to sell a system that cost you 650 to build up for 250....
ouch... I can still feel it now, oh well ya live and learn (as my dad
would say :) ).
Just passing on a bit of knowledge, gained in painful circumstances :(.
