Hello everyone

I'm such a rookie here I don't know where to begin. I just "graduated"
to a G3 (thanks to eBay) from a 6100 and after so many years of using
that dinosaur (couldn't afford to upgrade before), I am totally out of
touch. One more caveat - I'm not lazy - I really did try to find some
of these answers on XLer8Your Mac's FAQ, but the FAQs either didn't
cover my rudimentary questions or else I didn't understand the answers.
I would appreciate any recommendations or links to where I can try to
comprehend the technical issues involved. Anyway, here goes...

I have a Beige G3/266 Desktop with the original 24X CD-ROM drive, all
three PCI expansion slots empty, and nothing attached to the external
SCSI port. I would like to get a CD-RW drive (primarily for music and
photos).

1. What are the various pro's and con's regarding the choices between
IDE / Firewire / USB / SCSI? [Too many choices!] If I go with an
internal CD-RW (more on this later), am I limited to IDE? If USB or
Firewire are recommended, what is a good place to get the PCI card? Are
the PCI cards with both USB and Firewire on the same card reliable?

2. I am thinking of just replacing the 24X CD-ROM drive with an
internal CD-RW, as I am attracted to the idea of less desktop clutter.
The catalogs I see mostly have external CD-RWs, though, which I note are
more expensive - are the externals better performers than an internal?
One more thing - what am I giving up if I get rid of the 24X CD-ROM
drive? Here comes a stupid question (because I don't know the answer
but should) - is it possible to record music CDs from the internal
CD-ROM drive on an external CR-RW drive? If it is, I will not want to
get rid of the internal CD-ROM.

I appreciate any advice that anyone can provide.

Ciao,

John Gilbert
