I have a Yamaha 8424S internal in by Beige G3 MT. Retrospect at that time 
requires a SCSI CD-R/W with "packet write", and the Yamaha was the ticket.

I would still go with the SCSI.

I picked up a spare 8424S kit from Egghead.com on a special for under $90.

With the Yamaha 8424S I've never burned a coaster.

So, the Beige's SCSI is definitely NOT too slow for burning CDs.
