The SCSI implementation on the beige G3 is too slow for anything
except a scanner and/or a zip drive. Would be OK for CD-RW but SCSI
external CD-RW is more expensive. I am being presumptious here, and
assuming that if you wanted to spend a lot of money you would have a
shiny new G4. If you are using peripherals from your 6100 you'll be
okay, but anything new and you'll need USB. Cards are cheap. IDE is
your friend, although you can PROBABLY only use one drive... (some
non-US G3/266DTs had a Rev. B. motherboard, like mine!).

<easy answer> yes </easy answer>. See below.

The Desktop G3 has a very small case (I'm cussing not having spent a
bit more three years ago and buying a minitower...) and the easiest
road is to buy a cheap generic IDE CD-ROM and swap it in for the OEM
24x. I got a Mitsumi CR-4804, and it slots in without needing to hack
about with the case for it to open (some do). Works a charm.
Drawback is, when making music CDs, you need to copy AIFF files to
hard-disk before burning. Which means you probably need a bigger HD!
Incidentally, processor upgrades are very easy to install so shop
around for good deals on G3 ZIF cards.

I've had by G3/266DT for three years and still goes very well; specs are...
G3/466/1MB ZIF; 256MB RAM; Adaptec 2940UW, Proformance III 32MB
Graphics, USB card; 4GB original IDE + Quantum 18GB UW SCSI, Linotype
Jade 2 Scanner, 2 x Mitsubishi 17" screens.

Good luck
M.
