i would never buy a drive without knowing who actually made the thing,
there's far too much trash out there to trust vendors who don't think
you need to know, it's a bad business practice and such companies should
not be dealt with.  i'd also suggest trying other vendors,
dirtcheapdrives.com is one good one.  shop around for price in any case.
 i'd say an external hard drive should definitely have a fan, despite
the noise unless it's going to be in a well air conditioned room and you
are not going to put anything on top of it and are going to leave plenty
of air space around it.  i'm assuming you're talking about a firewire
drive?  note that you can buy the case and firewire interface part
separate from the drive so you can "roll your own".  i've never been
impressed by club mac, and they'll send you flyers forever, if you
aren't careful they'll also send you their club pc (or whatever they
call it) flyers, it's the same outfit with several fronts.
