Okay, I've decided to buy one of these two external Firewire drives for my G4/733, either the IBM 120-gig or the Maxtor 160, and I prefer the Maxtor because of its bigger size and the claim that it is also quieter, since it has an external power supply with no fan required.
If anyone cares to look, the two drives are advertised at http://www.cwol.com/firewire-drives/maxtor-3000xt-160gb-firewire-hard-drive.htm and http://www.firewire-1394.com/ibm-120gb-drive-firevue-bundle.htm Before I plunk down for the Maxtor, though, I'd like to know just how reliable this new fanless hard drive design is. With the power supply on the outside like that, the drive itself now sits alone in the case, uncooled by any fan as well. Has anybody bought one of these new external hard drives without a fan, and if so, have you had any trouble with it from overheating? I hate to buy a new design of anything, since it's so common for the buyer to be the guinea pig who gets to discover the flaws. The IBM drive I'm looking at goes overboard in the opposite direction, with TWO fans inside the case along with the power supply and the drive. I wouldn't like the double fan noise, I'm sure, but if it comes down to a choice between noise and reliability, I'll take the latter. Any opinions or information would be most appreciated.
