Thanks for the thoughts on which drive to buy. I sort of wanted a fan to cool the drive, but it appears that this outside power brick business is the way that manufacturers are going now. For example I was looking at the new Maxtor 160 GB drive at http://www.cwol.com/firewire-drives/maxtor-3000xt-160gb-firewire-hard-drive.htm and it has that same outside AC power adapter thingy. So, maybe it works fine. Certainly it has to be quieter. I don't know much about Maxtor's quality though.
The 120 GB IBM drive at http://www.firewire-1394.com/ibm-120gb-drive-firevue-bundle.htm has the power supply inside as usual and TWO fans to keep things cool. I'm leaning toward the IBM right now, but still thinking, hoping to gather more info.
