Ron,
Thanks for posting this. Though Apple has, at least in the past,
had a superior product, their marketing strategy has consistently been to
prey upon the credulity of the young and idealistic. The recent string on
the lists about the iTools price gouge indicates that some of the customer
(victim) base is snapping out of it. I'm sure this post will bring a spate
of response from those in their late 30's and 40's (or older) who have
suffered intellectual and emotional arrest in their late teens and early
20's. Good.
Good Morning--
I figured it might wake some folks up and spark a lively discussion. It's
been a while and I'm getting so tired of the whining over dot.mac and the
decision to charge. The decision has been made, they aren't going to
rescind it, so let's discuss something like the comments that Rush made and
see how folks feel about his perceptions of Jobs and Apple's marketing
strategy, or lack of one, by not capitalizing on a huge radio success and
having it's name associated with it. Whether you like or agree with Rush's
political philosophy isn't the issue. It's about getting the product name
and the product out to as many potential buyers as possible and have "big
name" endorsements of the product. Rush has been doing that for free for
years now. You would think Apple would reward his loyalty to their products
by at least placing some type of ad with him, even if it's just mentioning
the product name every so often. Gosh, even conservatives need a good
computer and OS, don't they? Can't they buy an Apple too? Their money is as
good as anyone else's, and they seem to have more of it!!!
I'm not a marketing guru, but I don't think it takes one to see the success
of that program and how other products have done when they advertise with
him. I think Rush might be pushing it a little when he says Apple could
have had 15% or so of the market share, but who knows. He seems to have the
"midas touch" when it comes to successfully marketing a product, and his
listeners do react when he asks them to do something like support a sponsor.
It should make for an interesting discussion for a couple of days, I hope.
Thanks for you response,
Ron Ward
