Wait a minute Aaron.   Apple did nothing wrong at all.  You are just missing
a small point.  All CD-DVD drives have a removeable faceplate (rtfm) that
allows installation into the MDD G4's.  Just pop the leading edge face off
the end of the DVD drive tray and install it as normal.  I have the Dual
1GHz and I noticed that the drive slot was a bit narrow, so I popped the
face off the burner I installed and pow.... No more problem.

I really am amazed how quickly all you Mac fans jump down Apple's throat for
"missing the boat" when it is user error that is causing the problem.  ;-)

(you know I mean this in a friendly smart a** kind of a way right???)
