I've got an APC Back UPS 500av. It works great with the APC PowerChute 
s/w for OS X. In our condo the power doesn't go out much, but when it 
does, it's just for a few seconds (our lines are underground) and the 
UPS has saved my bacon more than once.  All most home/home office users 
need is a UPS that will keep the computer running for a few minutes. 
This will provide enough time for you to shut it off. Otherwise, the 
PowerChute s/w does it for you.
