Uh. the port on all of the APC's is a seial port; the USB thing on my Back-UPS ES came with a funky hybrid cable.

Uh. Not true. APC has been putting USB on their UPS's for some time. The serial models are the older ones. APC has been guilty of putting USB as well as serial on RJ45 connectors.

USB cannot talk to old style RS232 serial directly without some electronics between so what may be mistaken as a converter cable actually is a modified USB cable- USB to RJ45 connector.

I think APC must have heard complaints? We just bought ( 3 weeks ago) two, Back-UPS ES 725's and I was surprised to find an ethernet port for the Power Chute software and a hybrid ethernet x USB cable included. The older ones we have are the serial ports.

Mine is about a year old, and that isn't an 'ethernet' port, it's an rj45 connector pressed into service for a serial connection.

Exactly.

I have some of those as well. APC's new stuff is USB and I see them using RJ45 connectors on these with a special patch cable. I am looking at one now. No electronics.
