Hello Bob, I had one of these once, and it did the very same thing. A quick question; your beige G3 is what revision? If Rev. B or < then I believe the card is indeed defective (no, it is not supposed to "whisper" on headphone playback). If your machine is Rev. A, try the card outright (don't install anything except the card) in a Rev. B machine if you can-see what you get. Best regards, Dana
